The idea for Locks of Love was started in December of 1997 in Palm Beach, Florida by Madonna Coffman, a retired cardiac nurse. Fifteen years later her 4 year old daughter developed alopecia.
“My hair was getting really long and I was going to get it cut.We have it in the summer, so we get cool short haircuts and then we start letting it grow again. After a few years of having it on a flatbed trailer at the Gruene Batting Cages, we were able to move to Billy’s Ice, which has been awesome. When Coffman was in her 20’s, she developed alopecia areata, a rare medical condition with no known cause or cure. During this time, Coffman quit all other charity work to devote herself to Locks of Love full time.Today she remains the President of their Board of Directors. The hair collected by Locks of Love is used to make wigs for patients who have lost their hair to alopecia and cancer. Local musician Matt Briggs hosts the New Braunfels ‘Locks of Love’ benefit every year and it has become a true labor of love.
